Kettering University Event #1

February 29th to March 2nd

Flint, MI, USA

We invite you to support our robot as we compete against 39 other teams!

Event Schedule

I’m Steven, and I have been a part of Strike Zone for 9 years. I’m the lead machining mentor and teach the students how to be independent. I also help them with life skills that  will make them more capable for their future.

Mechanical

Our mechanical team spent a good amount of time finishing many things. For instance, they finished putting the shooter and intake systems on the robot and the wiring on each robot system. They also completed the climber prototype and machine backup parts.

Programing

Our programming team spent this week programming the shooter and fine-tuned other robot systems to work together. They also programmed the LED’s for our robot.

Business/Media

The business team started the Technical Binder, wrote the newsletter, finalized the design for our team shirts, and sent out order forms to students. Impact award will be submitted this upcoming week.

In the past, we have volunteered at our library’s book fair, starting in 2015. We transport the books and tables to the fair, set up the booth, and tear it down. We also run games at Schickler Math Night, where elementary students use their math skills in math based games. Lapeer Days is a local festival held in August where we run a booth and participate in the parade that goes through our downtown area. The booth we ran this past year was the bounce houses! One of our sponsors, The Rotary Club, hosts a golf outing. We run a golf hole and talk to the golfers about what are team is about.

Currently, we are working on what we call the “Period Project.” With this project, we provide feminine hygiene products at event venues to remove the barriers related to menstruation. This is done to guarantee everyone is enabled to have healthy and enjoyable events. We provide products such as pads, tampons, deodorants, wipes, etc. We set up stations within bathrooms to provide an easy and accessible way for those who may not have access to those products. Our team is dedicated to being inclusive for all parts of FIRST and strives to ensure everyone is having a great time.

We organized a internal proposal that we call “The 5-Year Plan.” The first two years of this plan are dedicated to starting several FLL teams, which include a yearly 750-dollar budget, funded by Strike Zone, for registration and parts. The next three years are committed to establishing an FTC team to obtain sponsors. These teams would include either a part-time or full-time mentor.

My name is Conner, and I am in 10th grade. I’ve been on Strike Zone since the off-season of 2019. I decided to join Strike Zone because I watched Battle Bots and wanted to work more with robots. I’m a mechanical student on the team and love machining. I also like to work in my metals class and with my dad in his shop.  My post-graduation plans are to attend college.

I’m Dylan, I am a senior, and I have been on the team for two years. I originally joined Strike Zone to expand my knowledge of machining and design. One fun fact about me is that I have done archery for ten years. I want to go to Oakland University for mechanical engineering with a minor in music. Some activities I’m a part of are marching band for four years and jazz band for three years.

I’m Michael, and I have been on the team for a little over 3 months. I decided to join to build robots for competitions and learn the useful skills that come with doing so. I am a fast learner, which has really helped me with programming the robot. A fun fact about me is that I love donuts and I play the piano. Post-graduation, I want to achieve a degree for a high paying tech job.

Strike Zone gives our gratitude to everyone who donated food this season!

Leaving great opportunities open for all community students, regardless of financial standings, is at the core of Strike Zone’s foundation. With that being said, students and mentors are not expected to directly financially contribute to the team. One hundred percent of the funds come from the team’s partners and generous donations from the community.

Wish List

Whether it be monetary or otherwise, we are appreciative of any and all donations, as we operate year-round.

Help us leave this opportunity free to all students in Lapeer!
